To live in the cloud would be a wonderful thing. If you aren’t familiar with the term “cloud,” you need to learn it about it today. Cloud computing is when you can store your files on the Web for use at any computer and use online software to read and edit.
I am on a journey to consolidate my digital life and maintain order with all my files. Cloud computing is what I have been waiting for since I started this process. I use to have files on my home computer, different files on my laptop, and still more files on my work computer. I have since created a home network where I can have all those files in one central location. The problem is I do not want to set my server to be accessed from the Web. Instead, I have decided to use cloud computing.
There are pros and cons with cloud computing. One main pro for me is the fact I can store contacts and files for teaching instead of having to carry a USB thumb drive everywhere I go. One con is the amount of storage available. Some services offer up to 25 gigabytes, which is plenty for usable storage, but not for major backup needs.
Also, there are many who believe their privacy is being compromised by using the cloud. This is a good argument since you are storing files on someone else’s hard drives. I have decided to not store any of my financial, student files, or anything with important information on the cloud.
There are more pros than cons for me currently. More and more people are beginning to see the benefit in using cloud computing. I believe this is the future of the Web. We will store information in a central location so we can access whenever and where ever we may need it. In the upcoming blogs I will discuss the cloud services I have decided to use.
